Cellular Respiration & Proton Pumps

The illustration left shows a summary of the roles of the four major proton pumps (numbered in pink, I - IV) involved in cellular respiration. The proteins are located in the mitochondrial inner membrane (IM) and the mitochondrial matrix (Matrix) and function to build a proton gradient in the mitochondrial inner membrane space (IMS), replenish redox cofactors (NAD+ and FAD), and ultimately generate energy for the cell as ATP.
